“(Crank) has wasted his time on a symbolic resolution condemning the Democratic Socialists of America because he knows that we, as a worker led and worker funded organization, actually fight for the people of El Paso County in a way he only half-heartedly pretends to.”
– Justine Cortez, co-chair of the Colorado Springs Democratic Socialists of America.

After U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank led a successful resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to condemn socialism, local leaders of the Democratic Socialists of America called the move a “waste of time” as the political ideology gains momentum in American politics. The non-binding resolution, which passed the House on a 220-192 vote Tuesday, “condemns and denounces socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.” Colorado’s four Republican representatives voted for the resolution, while its four congressional Democrats voted against it.

As public opinion of the U.S. Supreme Court flags amid decisions that have roiled the nation, Democrats renewed calls ahead of the midterms to expand the high court, while House Republicans attempted but failed to pass a constitutional amendment this week that proposes to cap the number at nine. The House voted 212-206 Wednesday on a constitutional amendment to codify the number of Supreme Court justices at nine. A two-thirds majority was needed.

COMMENTARY

The number of bear attacks in Colorado this year is more than double the figure last year, and they come amid an extraordinary number of bear encounters as environmental pressures drive bears to food-finding extremes. Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the state's wildlife manager, has broadcast bear safety awareness, and news outlets in the state have widely covered the unusual bear activity. But what has failed to come through official and media channels is the obvious, if uncomfortable, fundamental cause of this phenomenon: global warming.
